The story of Kindrogan House

With backgrounds spanning hospitality, design, and business, we were drawn by its history, quiet beauty, and the sense that it still had stories left to tell.

We are restoring the estate with care and respect for its legacy, creating a place that's rooted and real, where guests can slow down, experience the rhythm of the landscape, and enjoy the warmth of lived-in spaces.

Just as importantly, Kindrogan is for the local community as much as for those passing through: a welcoming hub to gather, celebrate, and connect, ensuring the house remains a living part of the land for years to come.

How it all started...

Kindrogan Estate was historically associated with the Roberston and Reid families before passing to the Small Keir family.

There is no exact date of when the estate was built but it is assumed roughly in the 1740s - 1770s.

The estate was owned by Patrick Keir and passed to the Balfours where it remained in their family until 1960.

The final resting place of many of its members are still on Kindrogan Hill today.

In 1963, Kindrogan House began a new chapter when it was acquired by the Scottish Field Studies Council, becoming a place of learning and connection to the natural world.

For decades, it welcomed students and teachers alike, many of whom still share fond memories of the house and the time they spent here.

Its doors closed in 2020 during the Covid pandemic, but the stories and spirit of those years remain deeply woven into Kindrogan’s history.

In 2025, Kindrogan House was acquired by its newest custodians (us!) with a shared vision to restore it with care.

Our aim is to reimagine the house as both a welcoming hospitality destination and a meaningful space for the local community.
