The Story of Kindrogan House

Before the 1800s

Kindrogan Estate was historically associated with the Roberston and Reid families before passing to the Small Keir family.  There is no exact date of when the estate was built but it is assumed roughly in the 1740s - 1770s.

In 1963, Kindrogan House began a new chapter when it was acquired by the Scottish Field Studies Council, becoming a place of learning and connection to the natural world. For decades, it welcomed students and teachers alike, many of whom still share fond memories of the house and the time they spent here. Its doors closed in 2020 during the Covid pandemic, but the stories and spirit of those years remain deeply woven into Kindrogan’s history.

1880s - 1960

The estate was owned by Patrick Keir and passed to the Balfours where it remained in their family until 1960.  The final resting place of many of its members are still on Kindrogan Hill today.

2025

In 2025, Kindrogan House was acquired by its newest custodians (us!) with a shared vision to restore it with care. Our aim is to reimagine the house as both a welcoming hospitality destination and a meaningful space for the local community.
